Haiti Relief and Information
On January 12, 2010, a strong earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale struck close to Port-au-Prince. While the full extent of the damages has not yet been assessed, the earthquake has reportedly caused widespread loss of life and extensive damage to infrastructure. Power and telecommunications are severely disrupted.
The capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince, has been severely affected including critical city infrastructure components such as, electricity, water and phone services. Tens of thousands of people affected by the earthquake are now living on the streets and in makeshift camps in open public spaces throughout Port-au-Prince. The death toll is unknown but is expected to be high.
Priorities for assistance continue to be search and rescue, medical services, shelter, food and water. IOM estimates that 200,000 families (up to one million people) are in need of immediate shelter and non-food assistance. Major health concerns include untreated trauma wounds and infection of wounds.
In response to the devastating earthquake that hit south of Port-au-Prince Haiti on January 12, the Government of Canada has created the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund. For every eligible dollar donated by individual Canadians, the Government of Canada will contribute one dollar to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund, up to a total of $50 million. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) will allocate these funds to established Canadian and international humanitarian and development organizations for relief efforts that benefit the people in Haiti affected by the earthquake.
On January 14, 2010, the Government of Canada announced that it will match all individual donations to registered Canadian charitable organizations to support humanitarian and early recovery assistance to people affected by the earthquake in Haiti, up to a total of $50 million.
If you are missing a family member or friend in Haiti or if you are in Haiti and can people find loved ones, please contact Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada at 1-800-387-3124. Canadians in need of assistance are encouraged to make their way to the Canadian Embassy in Port-au-Prince on Delmas Road, between Delmas 75 and 71, and should bring any and all forms of Canadian identification with them. Canadians should be advised that assistance at the Embassy is limited to basic shelter on the compound grounds, food and water, as the building itself and power and telecommunications services have been greatly affected by the earthquake.
Canadians who are able to make their way to the Dominican Republic by their own means can get assistance at the Embassy of Canada in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Canadians seeking emergency consular assistance in the area should contact the Emergency Operations Centre or call 613.996.8885 collect. The Operations Centre of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Salvation Army
800.SAL.ARMY (725.2769)
Disasters can occur at any time and in any place. They often bring great death and destruction in their wake. The unpredictability of a disaster makes it all the more devastating. Canada is fortunate that emergency preparedness experts at all levels of government have well-organised, definitive plans, in which The Salvation Army plays an important part. But, despite the armies of trained personnel ready to go into action, very often the best we can do is to mitigate the effects of a disaster, and deal with its aftermath. Whenever disaster strikes, the presence of Salvation Army personnel is expected. Often assigned a specific role by Emergency Preparedness authorities, such as counselling, registration and identification, transportation, emergency housing, feeding or clothing, The Salvation Army is well equipped to handle any demands made of it in a disciplined and resourceful manner.
